As we at Successful ESL receive mail from around the world, it becomes more evident every day that because the world economy is having hysterics we little people are gasping, doubting and agonizing about our situation. Then we speculate about our future. What will become of us? Well, we’re all here in this changing world, so we’ll look on the bright side plus the positive options that are available to us.
Let’s suppose that you have some teacher training and you need a job.
You certainly aren’t alone! For a start, that knowledge will make you feel better. Your education is the most valuable thing you have because: NO ONE CAN TAKE IT AWAY FROM YOU! Think about that and you feel better already.
If you are a native English speaker then your employment opportunities expand to the whole world, because so many people need to speak and understand a little English. Schools in a multitude of countries are looking for ESL teachers. Good downloadable curriculum are available. The teaching conditions are improving and the salaries are getting better. The prices are reasonable because you can print as many as you need. Moving to another country can be traumatic at first, but when you smile at the students, show an interest in their lives and spend some weekend time with them, you’ll start to understand the richness of their culture. After teaching in Canada for a number of years I found that the people of Eastern Europe, Brazil and Hong Kong were teaching me as much as I was teaching them. This is a very rewarding way to bypass the difficult years of recession in your country and find a fulfilling life in a far-off place. You’ll return home with an enriched résumé to new times and new opportunities.
Perhaps you have teacher training but you aren’t a native English speaker.
I have found that most schools needing ESL teachers require native English speakers. However, you still have some options. How about looking for volunteer work in several schools? That is a great way to become known and learn the system. From that position you might jump to working as a substitute teacher. When teachers need a sub they want someone who knows their methods and their students. Also as a non-native speaker you may speak another language. You might go to an area where there are students who are from your original culture. Try working as a volunteer in that setting. There is no telling
what opportunities might arise.
This article suggests several possibilities that might allow teachers to bypass hard times by choosing an exciting option. Use the above ideas to brainstorm alternatives that would meet your special needs. Don’t let this world grind you down! At Successful ESL we encourage you to believe in yourself and perhaps jump into the unknown.
